Wood Frogs

It’s time to celebrate vernal pools.

In April look for the clear jewels,

Dense egg masses that swell in water,

Sign of a temporary squatter.

Wood frogs leave these spherical clear blobs.

Near hatch time the bubbles become green.

A symbiotic algae life scene.

Soon tadpoles with abandon swimming;

The temporary pond is brimming,

With these amphibians, brown, green, gray,

Metamorphosing along the way.

To nearby woodlands the newbies will stray;

You might hear adult frogs as they play,

An ecosystem spiritual.

So important this spring ritual.
